Frequently Asked Questions

  • Spiritual formation is the lifelong process of being formed into the likeness of Christ. It is not about self-improvement, vague spirituality, or simply becoming more disciplined. At its heart, Christian spiritual formation is about learning to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and learning to live faithfully in response to his grace.

This includes prayer, Scripture, worship, repentance, community, obedience, discernment, and the work of the Holy Spirit in shaping our inner life and outward actions.

  • Yes. While the phrase “spiritual formation” may not appear directly in Scripture, the concept is deeply biblical. The New Testament speaks often about being transformed, renewed, sanctified, conformed to Christ, and growing in maturity.

Spiritual formation is simply a way of describing how God forms his people over time through his Word, his Spirit, his church, and the ordinary practices of Christian discipleship.

  • No. Biblical spiritual formation is not New Age spirituality. It is grounded in Scripture, centred on Jesus Christ, and dependent on the work of the Holy Spirit.

  • I write and teach from within the historic Christian faith and a Protestant evangelical framework. I affirm the authority of Scripture, the Trinity, the full divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ, salvation by grace through faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus, the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, and the call of the church to worship, discipleship, mission, and love of neighbour.

My work is rooted in biblical theology, spiritual formation, and the historic wisdom of the Christian tradition, while remaining committed to testing all things by Scripture.
